Kelly M. Sweet, 26-year-old eighth-grade teacher at Deer Creek Intermediate School was charged in March 2008 with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old male student. In August Kelly Sweet pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor, as part of a plea deal that saw the prosecution drop a charge of second-degree sexual assault of a child (a felony with a potential sentence of 40 years in prison).Sweet was sentenced to 25 days in jail and two years probation.
According to a criminal complaint, the boy was sitting on a sofa watching a movie at Sweet's apartment March 9 while Sweet, who was lying on the sofa, rested her head on his lap. She began kissing him and initiated sexual contact, the complaint says.
The victim’s family members were not happy with the lack of jail time in this case.
